Museum of Art, Hong Kong

10 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon

Description

The Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMoA) is the main art museum of Hong Kong with an art collection of over 17,000 items spread over 10,000 sqm. The exhibitions in the museum are mainly of paintings, calligraphy and sculpture from Hong Kong, China and other parts of the world. It is divided into 6 exhibition halls, namely, the Chinese Antiquities (ceramics, clothing, embroidery), the Chinese Fine Arts (paintings and calligraphy), Historical Pictures (paintings, photos and maps reflecting the lifestyles in the Pearl River Delta and other Chinese ports during the 18th and 19th centuries), Xubaizhai Collection of Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy, Contemporary Hong Kong Art and the Museum of Tea Ware in the Flagstaff House. Post-renovation (2019), the new façade has a contemporary geometric design with a texture alluding to Chinese masonry patterns and ripple effects echoing the waves of Victoria Harbour.

Access & Transport

The building is located right next to Victoria Harbour, at the beginning of the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui. It is easily accessible by public transport (bus and 2 MTR stations: East Tsim Sha Tsui and Tsim Sha Tsui) as well as with the cross-harbour Star Ferry. Next to it, visitors can also find the Hong Kong Space Museum and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Accessibility info: https://hk.art.museum/en/web/ma/visit/barrier-free-facilities.html

Instructions & Recommendations

The HKMoA can be combined with a visit to the Avenue of Stars, a drink or meal at The Peninsula or a harbour cruise.

Meta review

Since its reopening after an extensive expansion and renovation, there has been no significant negative review or issue. Visitors enjoy the art collections, location, views and also welcome the additional floor space.

Environmental & Social

The renovated building construction and design include many sustainable features such as the use of passive design to maximize the use of natural sources of cooling, heating and ventilation to reduce energy consumption. Socially positive as it helps spread culture and the arts.
