Museum of History, Hong Kong

100 Chatham Road South, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon

Description

The Hong Kong Museum of History collections encompass natural history (rocks and minerals, shells and animal specimens), ethnography (local and southern China since the 1800s) and local history (including 14,000 photographs and postcards dating from the 1860s). Over 4,000 exhibits are displayed, and 750 graphic panels used as well as several dioramas and multi-media programmes. The highlight is the recreation of an entire arcaded street in Central in the 1880s and a full-sized fishing junk.

Access & Transport

The museum moved to its current location in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon in 1998. It is near the Science Museum on Chatham Rd South and can be accessed with a 10 mins walk from Hung Hom (West Rail and East Rail lines) and Jordan (Tsuen Wan line) MTR stations or a short walk for those already in the Tsim Sha Tsui area.

Instructions & Recommendations

*** Since 2020 the permanent collection is undergoing an extensive renovation so only an abridged version is currently on display. This is affecting our rating *** The museum can be combined with a visit to the Avenue of Stars, a harbour cruise, walking around the Mongkok or Temple street - or, for those really keen on cultural activities, the Science Museum is next door.

Meta review

The latest reviews consistently highlight that the number of tiems on display is only a fraction of the previous exhibits so that everything can be seen in 15-30mins. For info, the museum used to get very positive reviews and was often rated as the best one in the city. Positive reviews pointed out its informative content and the visual appeal whilst negative ones mentioned crowds when school groups visit. Finally, a minority thought the content boring, in particular the natural history section.

Environmental & Social

Most of the building's energy consumption is likely to be for air-conditioning (or heating during the short winter). Not a major carbon footprint on a per visitor basis though. Socially positive as it helps spread culture and preserve the city's cultural and historical heritages

Conclusion

The Hong Kong Museum of History used to provides visitors with an in-depth view about Hong Kong past: its land, culture and history. This is currently no longer the case and the museum is only worth a peek if you happen to pass by - until it reopens fully.

Key positive

Easy to get to and free admission
