Sham Shui Po Food Tour

Cheung Sha Wan Road, Cheung Sha Wan, Kowloon

Description

The Sham Shui Po Foodie Tour organised by Hong Kong Foodie Tours takes a small group to 6 breakfast and snack venues in the working-class neighbourhood of Sham Shui Po in northwest Kowloon. The tasting locations, subject to change, include a HK style café, a dumpling house, a soy specialty store, a traditional breakfast shop, a noodle restaurant and a Chinese cookies bakery. The tour starts at 9h00, lasts about 3 ½ hours and covers about 2km of flat urban terrain. The neighbourhood is predominantly blue-collar and is one of the densest in HK. It has many lively street markets, electronics and computer shops, food vendors and fabric stores.

Access & Transport

Sham Shui Po can be reached directly with the Tsuen Wan MTR line, it is by far the most efficient way to get there. The tour is a walking tour.

Instructions & Recommendations

The exact meeting location will be provided by the operator once booking is confirmed. Please read the T&C carefully and meet at 9h15 sharp. Bring an umbrella if you suspect rain may invite itself.

Meta review

The reviews about the tour and the guides are all very positive. Customers enjoy being guided by a local and trying out foods and drinks that they would otherwise have overlooked or not been exposed to in other parts of the city.

Environmental & Social

Socially, this tour supports independent local guides as well as an interaction (physical and economic) with the neighbourhood's community. We deem this activity to be environmentally neutral.

Conclusion

If you have the budget, the Sham Shui Po foodie tour is a fun and interesting idea. You will get to discover some of the HK's heartland and traditional morning food. What you are paying for is the guided experience and interactions, not really the food and drinks.

Key positive

Fantastic opportunity to interact with Hong Kongers without speaking Cantonese

You get to try various tasty food and drinks

Key negative

A little expensive - but then the tour is limited to 8 participants

Food may not suit every tourist taste

Suitability

Suitable for all ages but best if children are at least 10yrs old to enjoy the tour The Sham Shui Po seems to be accessible for wheelchair users (not the Central and Sheung Wan tour)
