Sky 100 Observatory deck

1 Austin Road West, West Kowloon, Hong Kong Island

Description

Sky100 is a 360-degree observation deck on the 100th storey of the ICC skyscraper in West Kowloon, almost 400m above sea level. From up there, visitors have a panoramic bird's eye view of Hong Kong Island and Victoria Harbour, the whole of Kowloon and Lantau to the west.

Access & Transport

The ICC (International Commerce Center) is located above Kowloon MTR station (Airport Express service and Tung Chung line) and is best reached by underground. It is also next to the Western Harbour Crossing tunnel and within walking distance of the Austin MTR station and West Kowloon high speed train station with connections to the Chinese mainland. Access to the deck is via high speeed lift and takes just under 60 seconds.

Instructions & Recommendations

Ideally, check the weather before buying tickets so you can go on a non-foggy day! Any time is good otherwise. The Ozone Bar, in the same building, is an alternative (more expensive) option if you are looking for a more social but exceptional setting.

Meta review

Sky100 is one of the city's best rated attractions by tourists with amazing views on clear days. Some recurring comments about glass reflections being an issue when taking pictures and views from the shore or hotel bars being nearly as good.

Environmental & Social

On the 100th storey of a steel, glass and concrete tower with materials imported from all over the world. Not an eco-friendly activity and keep in mind the construction aspects involved (e.g. foreign workers, health & safety) though the bservation deck is not primary purpose of the buidling.

Conclusion

The Sky100 observation deck is probably the best commercial option for 360° views of Hong Kong on a clear day. If you enjoy hiking, some of the peaks such as Needle Hill, Tai Mo Shan or Lantau Peak are more spectacular though. For a view of the harbour and HK Island skyline there are other alternatives to consider, such as hotel bars or simply the Avenue of Stars (which is at sea level but is free).
