Symphony of Lights in Victoria Harbour

Avenue of Stars, Tsim Sha Tsui East, Kowloon

Description

The Symphony of Light is a free to watch light and sound show held every day at 20h00 (weather permitting) involving just over 40 buildings surrounding Victoria Harbour (both the Kowloon and Hong Kong Island sides are involved). It is organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board and lasts about 15 minutes. The best vantage points are the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and on harbour cruises. The Central and Wan Chai waterfronts are also possible but not as good since most of the action is on the Hong Kong Island skyline. Since end 2017, the music is from the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and meant to convey the East meet West concept.

Access & Transport

The TST Promenade is easily accessible by public transport (bus and 2 MTR stations: East Tsim Sha Tsui and Tsim Sha Tsui) as well as with the cross-harbour Star Ferry. Central and Wan Chai waterfronts are also accessible from nearby MTR stations.

Instructions & Recommendations

Make sure to get there on time and early (to get a good spot) with a camera and/or video recorder. It is, of course, best to go on a clear day (no rain or fog). This activity is best combined with one of the museums near the TST promenade and a walk along the Avenue of Stars

Meta review

The show is on most visitors to do list when in the city and a majority do enjoy it, but overall opinions are mixed with many spectators stating their disappointment and complaining about the crowds on the TST side.

Environmental & Social

The lights show draws power from electricity so there is no exhaust pollution. However, 50% of the city's electricity is generated from coal and only 2% from renewable sources (the remaining coming from nuclear and natural gas). Socially neutral

Conclusion

The Symphony of Lights show is iconic so it is worth going one night but don't let that be the anchor of your evening, otherwise you run the risk of being disappointed.
