Jamek Mosque (KL)

Jalan Tun Perak, Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur

Description

Jamek Mosque (Masjid Jamek), a.k.a. the Friday Mosque was completed in 1909, making it one of Kuala Lumpur's oldest mosques and the main one for 50 years until Masjid Negara was built. It was designed with Neo-Mughal influences; it has 3 domes, 2 minarets with a distinctive pink brick and white plaster striped pattern, Moorish arches, and umbrella-type of structures providing shelter in the courtyard.

Access & Transport

The mosque is built across the Gombak river from the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and Merdeka Square, in the historical centre of KL. The Masjid Jamek light rail station (AGL, SPL) is located next to the building.

Instructions & Recommendations

You should dress conservatively and note that the hours for tourist visits are different from that of worshippers. When you are in the area, make sure to check out the Merdeka / Independence Square and Chinatown's Petaling Street.

Meta review

Not listed near the top of places to see in KL, whether it is based on travel guidebooks or online review portals. The best aspect is the riverside location and some visitors think that is enhanced by the skyscrapers in the background and the way it is lit up at night. The consensus is that there isn't much to see inside. Recurring tip that arms, shoulders, and knees must be covered to go inside + hair as well for women.

Environmental & Social

No environmental impact. Part of the city's architectural heritage

Conclusion

Masjid Jamek is not worth crossing the town for, but a building you should definitely include in you Chinatown & Merdeka Square exploration. It gives a sense of nostalgia for when things were smaller, and simpler...?
