Monastery of San Millán de Yuso - by Chao Perez Torrego on Google
Description
The Monastery of San Millán de Yuso was constructed in the 11th century, in the same village as the Suso Monastery (Yuso means "Lower" and Suso means "Upper") where the relics of San Millán were kept. It had to be rebuilt in the 16th & 17th centuries, in Herrerian style. The main areas are the cloister with its pointed arches, the church with an impressive retable, and the sacristy sporting frescoed ceilings. Nowadays, the community of monks live from agrarian activities and part of the complex is used as a hotel.
Access & Transport
The monastery is situated in the village of San Millán de la Cogolla, 40km southwest of Logroño (A-12 exit 108 onto the LR-427) and 18km from Nájera. There is a large parking area just past the complex.
Instructions & Recommendations
Note that all visits are guided, in Spanish, and last about 50mins The two monasteries are only a 15-20mins walk from each other but are managed separately.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Preserves the region's architectural and historical heritages. It also brings some economic influx to the surrounding villages
Conclusion
The Monastery of San Millán de Yuso is best experienced as a combo with that of Suso by those interested in religious art and history. A good option for travellers looking to discover La Rioja in depth as well, but definitely not a must-see monument.
