Description
The ALAT Museum is dedicated to the history of French light army aviation (Aviation Légère de l'Armée de Terre). It gathers over 30 airplanes, some helicopters, and hundreds of related objects and memorabilia. It is managed by an association of volunteers; hence it only opens in the afternoons.
Access & Transport
The museum is located at 58 Av. de l'Aérodrome, 2.5km from the centre of Dax and 4km south of the train station. The town is on the regional and high-speed train line between Bordeaux (75-90mins), Pau and Bayonne/Biarritz. It is also easy to reach by car by combining the A63 and the D947 (when coming from Bordeaux) or the D824 (coming from the Basque region).
Instructions & Recommendations
There are free guided visits in French on Tuesdays and Fridays at 14h30 (~2h). This activity is best combined with a visit of the town of Dax and its surroundings.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Helps preserve a "technical heritage" and volunteers share their passion and knowledge.
Conclusion
The ALAT museum is a gem and is worth a detour for those with an interest in all things mechanical, planes and helicopters. We would recommend this to anybody in the Dax area as well, it is inexpensive and staffed with passionate volunteers.
Key positive
Impressive content and educational visit
Cheap entrance fee
Key negative
Specialized topic so some visitors won't be engaged for very long
Suitability
All ages welcome but best for children over 10years old as it gets a little technical, but younger kids should still enjoy looking around. Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
