Cazaux & Sanguinet Lake

405 Avenue de Losa, Sanguinet, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

The lake of Cazaux-Sanguinet is located between La Teste de Buch and Biscarosse, it straddles the departments of Gironde and the Landes. It has a surface area of 55 km2 with several beaches, some of which are very shallow and family friendly. There are plenty of nautical sports on the lake but note that there is a substantial military exclusion zone as the French Air Force base used for fighter tests and training flights is nearby.

Access & Transport

By car from Bordeaux take the expressway A63 and then the A660 towards La Teste for 2km and then left on the D216 to Sanguinet - about 65km southwest of Bordeaux. Coming from the south, head north on the A63 (tolls) until exit 17 at Liposthey and take the D43 until Parentis en Born. From there you can head to Biscarosse on the southern edge of the lake or to Sanguinet on its north-eastern side.

Instructions & Recommendations

Many activities close during the off-season so check the opening days and weather forecast before you head there. The views of the lakes and hikes can be enjoyed year-round though.

Meta review

Only good reviews for the lake. Visitors enjoy the transparent waters and many untouched sections. Several families with young kids also highlight the shallowness of the beaches as a plus. The only complaints relate to the loud fighter jet flights from the Cazaux air force base.

Environmental & Social

This is a green activity unless you are planning to use a motorboat. Revenues from tourism also help the rural economy and local communities

Conclusion

The Lake Cazaux - Sanguinet is a scenic and quiet option in the Landes region with the Ocean not far off and many potential activities such as paddle boarding, kayaking and sailing. The shallow and warm waters make it perfect for families.

Key positive

Very quiet and not touristy outside of the French school holidays

Key negative

None but nothing spectacular to see either

Suitability

Family-friendly. Many sections of the lake are accessible for visitors with reduced mobility but not all (some beaches can only be reached by dirt paths).
