Chateau de Lacquy, Armagnac

404 Chemin de l'Armagnac, Lacquy, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

The Château de Lacquy is located in the Bas-Armagnac area of the Gascogne (cultural) region in the southwest of France. It has been producing Armagnac and remained in the same family for the last 300 years; originally the production was carted out to Mont de Marsan and then by boat to Bayonne from where it was shipped abroad. The vineyards cover 25ha and every single step of the production process (distillation, ageing and bottling) is performed on the estate. The Chateau itself was built is 1777 and expanded in the early 20th century, and the winery was built in 1876. It can be visited by prior appointment and this should include tasting a couple of wines.

Access & Transport

The estate is 120km south of Bordeaux but can be reached in about 90mins thanks to the A63 / A65 expressways - take exit 3 in Roquefort and continue on for about 10km on the D934 before turning left onto Route de Jouanon and Route de Villeneuve. Mont de Marsan is only 25km to the west.

Instructions & Recommendations

There is no fee involved in the visit but it is good practice to purchase a bottle, which is a perfect gift or souvenir of the place. Whilst in the area you should visit the village of Labastide d'Armagnac (9kms away) and the very unusual Our Lady of Cyclists church.

Meta review

N/A as we could not find sufficient user reviews but the estate and their production is known as one of the best in Armagnac.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Socially the cultural aspect (discovery of the terroir and wine making culture of the Armagnac region) evens out the alcohol element.

Conclusion

The Château de Lacquy is well worth a visit if you are in the area or generally interested in the production of Armagnac. The estate is well cared for and you will get to learn about Armagnac making (and taste some) with an opportunity to buy bottles directly at the property.
