Écomusée de Marquèze

Route de Solférino, Sabres, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

The Marquèze eco-museum ("écomusée de Marquèze") is a reconstruction of the agro-pastoral system typical in that part of Haute Lande region around the end of the 19th century, a period marked by the arrival of the train line there. The neighbourhood comprises authentic houses, sheepfolds and mills organized around a grass / lawn area called the "airial". Visitors will be transported there by train and children can enjoy various games and animations. There are also temporary exhibitions within the Pavillion.

Access & Transport

From Bordeaux, the fastest way by car is to take the A63 southbound (tolls) until Saugnacq-et-Muret and Exit 18 following the D834 until Sabres. Watch the speed traps on the long straights of the Landes. From the southwest (southern coast of the Landes and Basque country), take the A63 northbound and exit 15 towards Sabres. The ticket booth is located in the Sabres train station and the pavillon is just across the road. Visitors the Quartier de Marquèze will board the train at the station for a 10mins ride.

Instructions & Recommendations

Note that there is a lunch break for the ticket office and train rides into the eco-museum area. Check the online schedule if you plan on arriving around that time (https://www.marqueze.fr/en/ecomuseum-opening-hours.html)

Meta review

Positive reviews, including from non-French speaking tourists. Visitors enjoy the educational aspect, the "authenticity" and the various activities for kids. Most people enjoy the low-key theming but for a minority it is too small and not impressive enough. Most of the negative comments center around the train schedule which is only once every 40mins.

Environmental & Social

Green activity except for the train ride that uses old technology and fuel. The eco-museum brings the community together, provides employment and helps preserve the cultural heritage of the region.

Conclusion

The Marquèze eco-museum is both a recreational and educational activity that makes for a good day out, especially as a family. It provides a good insight into the lifestyle of 150years ago in the region and the changes brought about by modern transports and the shift to a service economy.

Key positive

Educational and fun family activity

Not very crowded

Key negative

Nothing spectacular to see

Suitability

Suitable for all ages. It is unclear if the train and the various buildings are accessible for visitors with reduced mobility - best check with the management ahead of time.
