Moliets Beach, Landes

Avenue de l'Océan, Moliets-et-Maa, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

Moliets beach is situated along the French Atlantic Cote d'Argent which consists in a nearly continuous ribbon of golden sand. It is in the commune of Moliets-et-Maâ, 5km north of Vieux Boucau and 10km from the lake of Leon. The resort village is set back about 200m off the beach so it can hardly be seen; it includes seasonal accommodation for rent and the usual F&B, groceries and other beach stores. Like most beaches in the Landes department, the waves can be strong - which makes them popular with surfers.

Access & Transport

Driving instructions: from Bordeaux / northern side: take the A63 southbound until Exit 12 in Castet, go through the village and head west on the D42 followed by the D142 after 3km until Leon and continue on the D652. From the south: take the A63 northbound and take exit 11 in Magescq. Cross the village and drive northwest on the D16 until Leon followed by the D652 to Moliets-et-Maâ.

Instructions & Recommendations

Make sure to bring your beach wear, towels, bio sunblock and sunglasses. Also be aware that the currents can be strong. For family with younger kids, the area where the courant d'Huchet meets the ocean or the lake of Leon 10km inland provide alternative safe swimming options.

Meta review

Not well known internationally so most tourists there are French. The reviews are very positive, people love the beach for its width and length and families recommend the area where the Huchet river connects with the ccean for quiet waters. The only downside are the crowds in August and the strength of the water current.

Environmental & Social

No carbon footprint linked to this activity. Some economic benefits to the local community but increased commercialization also has its drawbacks

Conclusion

The beach of Moliets is one of several good options on the stretch of Atlantic Coast between Arcachon and Biarritz. What sets it apart is its immediate hinterland with the Lac de Leon and the Courant d'Huchet that makes it a great destination for one or several days.
