Disneyland Hong Kong

Disney Way, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, New Territories

Description

Disneyland Hong Kong is the city's largest theme park (the second largest is Ocean Park). It has a significantly smaller footprint than its USA counterparts, adheres to the rules of Feng Shui and consists of seven themed areas: Main Street, U.S.A., Fantasyland, Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Grizzly Gulch, Mystic Point, and Toy Story Land. As usual for a Disney theme park, there is also a daily parade and several shows to entertain visitors of all ages.

Access & Transport

The park is located on the east side of Lantau Island, midway between the Airport and the north of Kowloon. Access by taxi is very straightforward whilst public transport is efficient but requires at least one change in Sunny Bay (by MTR) or Lantau Link Toll Plaza. The bus terminus and MTR station are both close to the entrance gates. It is also worth noting that there are some shuttles to various hotels near the airport and in the city.

Instructions & Recommendations

The size of the park is such that most of it can be covered in 1 day, subject to the crowd factor (so pay attention to the dates). For a 1-day visit, it is probably not worth staying at the nearby hotels but a 2-day / 1 night combo can be a great family experience, if budget allows. For residents interested in multiple visits, the annual membership is worth considering (check the blackout dates carefully) or the 2-day tickets. For parties of more than 2, we would recommend a taxi ride as being time efficient and quite affordable.

Meta review

Disneyland parks are popular over the world and the HK one is no exception with close to 6mn visitors annually and regular appearances in the list of top things to do in the city. Reviews for the park are overall very positive with the caveat that visitors should not expect the variety of rides as in the much larger Florida and California parks. Recurring negative comments relate to crowding, expensive food and the smaller size than the US peers.

Environmental & Social

There are two aspects to the Disneyland HK environmental impact. 1 - the project development and construction entailed significant reclamation work that negatively impacted marine life; and 2 - the ongoing operational aspects. In this respect, the park has a comprehensive policy and details several practices and projects at the below link. These relate to waste minimization, energy conservation, water conservation and other "green initiatives". https://hkcorporate.hongkongdisneyland.com/environment.html A lot of the CSR policies are taken at the Walt Disney Company group level. These cover professional and personal development, diversity and inclusion, health and safety, pay but also supply chain labour standards. Locally, the company managing the park is involved in several community projects detailed here: https://hkcorporate.hongkongdisneyland.com/community.html#volunteering

Conclusion

Disneyland Park lives up to the Disney theme and should prove a good day out for those who like this type of activities, in particular families with younger kids. It is nowhere near as big as some of it Disney siblings though, so that should be front and center of any visitor's mind.

Key positive

A good option to mix it up or satisfy the younger family members

About a 30 mins taxi ride from the city center only

Key negative

Value is debatable but for most visitors it is about ticking the Disneyland box

Crowds can be an issue and limit the number of rides one can do in a day

Suitability

All ages welcome but definitely best for families. Visitors with disabilities (mobility, visual, hearing) have access to special services but won't be able to enjoy all rides.
