Lantau Peak hike

Ngong Ping Road, Ngong Ping, New Territories

Description

Lantau Peak (Fung Wong Shan - meaning Phoenix Mountain) is the 2nd highest peak in Hong Kong at (934m alt), behind Tai Mo Shan in the New Territories (957 alt). It is located in central Lantau Island and can be reached by the Lantau trail from the east side (along Tung Chung rd - 600m ascent) or the west side (leaving from Ngong Ping / the Big Buddha). The mountain is formed by volcanic rocks and, due to its elevation, strong winds and fog occur throughout the year. The view from the top is stunning and allows one to see most of Hong Kong as well as Macau, 65km to the west, on a clear day.

Access & Transport

The best way is to get by MTR until Tung Chung station (on the Tung Chung / Orange line) and from there either take a taxi or the bus 3M to Pak Kung Au (make sure you mention this to the driver beforehand). From there, follow Section 3 of the Lantau Trail, ascending the peak and then descending the steps into Ngong Ping. This 4.5km route takes about three hours. The hike can also be done in reverse or as an out-and-back.

Instructions & Recommendations

Watching the sun rise from the peak is a popular choice among hikers, in which case you may want to consider staying nearby in Ngong Ping. In any case, proper footwear and plenty of water is a must as there is no water point on the way and conditions can be highly variable when climbing.

Meta review

The online reviews are very positive about the hike, highlighting how stunning the view is from the top as well as a sense of achievement for making it to the summit. The main negative comment is that the air is not always clear, which may impact the views from the summit.

Environmental & Social

Green activity and socially neutral

Conclusion

Hiking up Lantau Peak will give you one of the best 360° view in Hong Kong. It is quite a steep climb but worth the effort (of getting there and going up) if the weather is on your side and can be nicely complemented with a visit to the Big Buddha / Po Lin Monastery or further hiking along the Lantau trail.

Key positive

Wonderful views across Lantau, Kowloon and some of the outlying islands

Can easily combine with Po Lin Monastery and the Big Buddha going down the Ngong Ping side

Well-marked and steep but not too technical

Key negative

Takes some time to get to from the city - especially the bus ride to go to / from Ngong Ping

Can feel a little crowded / noisy at the summit on some sunny weekends or public holidays

Suitability

The hike simply requires a little bit of fitness and proper shoes. It can also work with families depending on whether the children are used to this type of activity. Not recommended for younger kids or for individuals with a low fitness level.
