Burney Falls, California

Lake Road, Shasta County, California

Description

Burney Falls is a 35m high and 76m wide waterfall on Burney Creek in Shasta County, Northern California. It is the centrepiece of McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park in the volcanic Cascade Range which also offers camping, fishing, water sports, hiking and horseback riding facilities. The falls are at their most intense in spring and summer, when the snow melts.

Access & Transport

The park is 100km northeast of Redding, 10km north of CA-299 on CA-89 near Burney Accessibility info: https://www.parks.ca.gov/AccessibleFeatures/Details/455

Instructions & Recommendations

Visitor Center and Interpretive activities (including hiking tours) are Wed-Sun from 11h to 16h. The park experiences extremely high visitation beginning in April and continuing through October. On holidays and all summer weekends the park will fill to capacity and entrance into the park is subject to closure due to limited parking availability. Dogs are not allowed on trails or day-use areas.

Meta review

The waterfall is often on the short-list of things to see in Northern California according to travel websites. Online reviews are also very positive with visitors often rating it as one of the best they have seen. The views from the bottom in particular are 'tremendous' and the loop trail is highly recommended. Summer tends to be quite busy but still manageable. Come off-season if possible.

Environmental & Social

Green activity + infrastructure & visitor numbers are sustainable (manageable or no impact on the waterfall and park). Also brings a little economic activity to rural communities in the region.

Conclusion

Burney Falls is visually striking, especially between April and September. We would not suggest driving 4-5h to see it purposely, but rather - just as for Lassen Volcanic Park - one should include it as part of a multi-day Northern California road-trip.
