Description
The Episcopal Palace of Astorga, nicknamed Gaudí Palace, was designed at the turn of the 20th century by Antoni Gaudí in a mix of medieval and Catalan Modernisme styles. The edifice uses gray granite and features signature elements such as the arches of the entrance and the chimneys integrated in the side façades. Inside, the highlight is the luminous chapel with stained-glass windows that seem to be inspired by the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. The Palace now houses a museum dedicated to the Camino de Santiago Trivia: the building is one of only 3 buildings designed by Gaudi outside Catalonia and came about on the strength of his relationship with the local Bishop.
Access & Transport
The palace is located right next to the Cathedral, in the town of Astorga, in the western part of León province. There is a car park next to the monument. Astorga is 45km west of the city of León (N-120); there are direct buses making the trip in 50mins.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the Catedral de Astorga
Environmental & Social
No environmental data about the building. Moderate electricity consumption. Part of the town's architectural heritage.
Conclusion
We would no drive to Astorga to admire this building but, once there, we would no doubt recommend a visit to anybody who enjoys original architecture, the use of shapes and creation of unique spaces.
