Description
León Cathedral (Santa María de Regla de León) was built in the 13th century on the Way of St James (Camino de Santiago). It is one of the most impressive examples of Gothic architecture and is best known for its extensive use of stained-glass windows (1,800m2 in total). Other highlights include the two towers flanking the main façade, the sculpted portals, and the gilded altarpiece of the Main Chapel by Nicolás Francés. The museum (not reviewed here) houses a large collection of sacred art including Romanesque sculptures and several manuscripts.
Access & Transport
The cathedral is located in the city centre, at the northern edge of the Barrio Humedo. Buses L7c and L3 stop nearby, behind the monument where parking is located. Other bus services stop a 3mins walk away on Plaza de Santo Domingo and the train station is 10mins walk away.
Instructions & Recommendations
Admission price for the museum is 5€ and for cathedral + museum it is 10€. We suggest combining this monument with an exploration of the Barrio Húmedo, the Plaza del Grano, and a visit of the Casa Botines.
Environmental & Social
We deem this attraction environmental neutral. Part of the city's architectural heritage
Conclusion
León Cathedral is without doubt one of the most impressive churches in the country, which by itself means it is worth a special trip and should be of interest for everybody. The first sight on the Plaza is jaw dropping and the interior is unusually luminous thanks to the extensive use of stained-glass windows.
