Plaza Mayor de Leon - by david monk on Google
Description
Barrio Húmedo is the nickname given to an area centred around Plaza de San Martín, within the historical centre of León; it includes various architectural highlights such as the Plaza Mayor, the Antiguo Consistorio de León, several palaces/townhouses, and the Plaza Santa Maria del Camino also known as Plaza del Grano. The neighbourhood its known for is nightlife, well supported in that by over 100 bars and clubs, and a multitude of restaurants that generally specialize in regional cuisine. The Plaza del Grano was the marketplace for grains and agricultural products and has retained a medieval, village-like look. The fountain in the centre represents the confluence of the Bernesga and Torío rivers.
Access & Transport
The neighbourhood is directly south of the cathedral and about 1km from León's train station. The main tourist sights are within walking distance.
Instructions & Recommendations
Worth visiting by day for pictures of the monuments and at night for the lively atmosphere.
Environmental & Social
Urban environment with hardly any green spaces. The flow of tourism is manageable so commercialization is not unsustainable
Conclusion
In our opinion, the Barrio Humedo is one of the main touristic draws of the city, on par with the cathedral and the basilica. The atmosphere is both historical and genuinely local. Great to explore by day and experience by night.
