Description
The Carmo Convent of Lisbon with the ruined church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the most visible trace of the 1755 earthquake that devastated the city. The monastery was founded in the 14th century and is now operated as an archaeological museum (Museu Arqueológico do Carmo) housed in the old apse chapels. Some of the original structural features are still standing and form a central nave skeleton.
Access & Transport
The monastery and museum are in the centre of the historical city, directly east of the Bairro Alto neighbourhood. The Rossio train and metro station (green line) and the Baixa-Chiado metro station are both very close (2-3mins walk)
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with the Santa Justa lift, the Church of São Roque, and an exploration of the Bairro Alto.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral and helps preserve the city's architectural heritage
Conclusion
Carmo Covent is essentially a small open-air museum in the middle of Lisbon. It gives the city a dramatic visual example of its historical scars. Not sure the entrance fees are justified but it is definitely worth a look.
