Igreja de São Roque, Lisbon

Igreja de Sao Roque - by Massimo Calandrini on Google
Description
The Igreja de São Roque (Church of Saint Roch) was built in Baroque style in the 16th century and was the first Jesuit church in the Portugal and its dominions. It is notable for its extensively decorated altar, ceiling, and chapels. There are paintings, sculptures, jewellery, and mosaics in various Baroque trends. The highlight is perhaps the trompe-l'oeil Mannerist ceiling that gives the illusion of barrel vaulting.
Access & Transport
The church is at the eastern edge of the Bairro Alto, close to the Rossio train station and 400m away from the Baixa-Chiado metro station (green and blue lines). Tram 24 and buses 202 & 758 stop next to the monument.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this attraction with an exploration of the Bairro Alto neighbourhood and the Carmo Convent.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Part of the city's artistic heritage.
Conclusion
São Roque is arguably the "religious highlight" of Lisboa and among the top sights in terms of art quality. Maybe a little too much at times, but that makes it quite unique.
Key positive
Exquisite decorations and craftmanship
Centrally located with other attractions nearby
Key negative
A little dark inside
Suitability
