Description
The Palace of the Marquesses of Fronteira was built as a hunting pavilion in the second half of the 17th century. The main attraction is the 5.5ha garden adorned with azulejos (Portuguese tiles) representing different themes such as arts, the planets, and mythological figures. The Palace can also be visited as part of the guided tour but this falls outside the scope of this review.
Access & Transport
The Palace is in north-western Lisbon, at the edge of the Monsanto Forest Park, along Avenida 24 de Janeiro. Bus 770 stop in front of the building. The closest metro station is 'Jardim Zoológico' (blue line), 1.1km away.
Instructions & Recommendations
The ticket for the palace guided tour + garden cost 15€ (at the time of this review update) and takes place several times a day (5 times in English, 5 times in French, 2 times in Spanish and 2 times in Portuguese). We suggest combining this attraction with an exploration of Monsanto Forest Park.
Environmental & Social
Green attraction that helps preserve the artistic heritage of the city.
Conclusion
The garden of the Fronteira Palace might not be a must-see but it is certainly worth investing one hour and a few euros to enjoy this visual and atmospheric experience. Probably something to line up for a return visit or for those with at least 4 days in Lisbon.
Key positive
Gorgeous combination or art and nature
Key negative
A little out of the way
