Jerónimos Monastery

Praça do Império, Lisboa, Lisboa

Description

The Jerónimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos) was built in the 16th century (the entire 100 years in fact), funded by a tax on the profit of the trade with Africa and the Orient. It is one of the best examples of the refined Portuguese Manueline style which incorporates marine elements carved in limestone. Highlights include the south portal filled with gables and pinnacles, the richly decorated pillars of the main chapel, the 2-storey cloister, and various tombs (it became the necropolis of the royal dynasty of Aviz), including that of famed navigator Vasco de Gama.

Access & Transport

The monument is in the Belem neighbourhood of Western Lisbon. Tram 15E and bus 714 stop 100m away at 'Mosteiro Jerónimos'

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with the Belém Contemporary Art Museum next door, the Tower of Belem and/or the Padrão dos Descobrimentos monument. The famous Pastéis de Belém shop is close to the tram stop.

Meta review

A UNESCO WHS and crowds to match, which means that you can expect long lines unless you plan you visit early morning - this is the only consistent negative comment. Otherwise, travel guides and online reviewers are very complimentary about the exquisite ornamentation and rank this monument as one of the unmissable attractions in the city. Note that there are separate entrances (and queues) for the monastery and the church

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally neutral. Preserves the city's architectural, artistic, and historical heritages.

Conclusion

The monastery is arguably one of the architectural highlights of Lisbon. Even if you are not a culture fan but happen to be in Belem, make sur to check it out from the outside. Best enjoyed with a guide if you can.
