Lisbon Cathedral

Largo da Sé, Lisboa, Lisboa

Description

The Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa) was built in the 12th century and restored several times throughout its long history. It is connected with a cloister and has a fortification-like design with two front towers and crenelations over the walls. The stained-glass window reproducing the 12 Apostles around the central figure of Christ the saviour is one of the highlights alongside the Chapel of Bartholomew Joanes that encloses several Renaissance paintings.

Access & Transport

The cathedral is in the historical centre of the city, walking distance to many attractions and a short walk from the Tagus River. Trams 12 and 28 stop at 'Limoeiro', right next to the monument and the Terreiro do Paço metro station (blue line) is 5mins' walk away.

Instructions & Recommendations

The ticket includes an ascent to the High Choir, a visit to the Museum of the Treasury of the Cathedral, and a walk along the naves and deambulatory of the church. For those who come for worship or prayer, access is free.

Meta review

As the city's cathedral, the Sé de Lisboa finds its way in travel guides but, with a few exceptions from fine church connoisseurs, the recurring feedback is that it is relatively small and underwhelming as compared to the cathedrals of other major European cities. There are some good city views from the terrace (only accessible to ticket holders) and the Q code scanning is handy but the international languages version is a little short.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Revenues from entrance fees go towards the maintenance and preservation of the monument that is part of the city's architectural heritage.

Conclusion

The Cathedral of Saint Mary Major is one of the most important religious buildings in Lisbon but not one of the most interesting to visit. Bes reserved for worshippers and church fans.

Key positive

Long history and walking distance to many other attractions

Key negative

No exceptional architectural or artistic features

Suitability

No religious denomination restrictions but visitors should dress conservatively
