Description
The Lisbon Oceanarium is home to a broad range of marine species such as sharks, rays, seahorses, octopuses but also sea otters, penguins, and birds. The centrepiece is a 1,000m2 tank, 7m deep with sharks, barracudas and mola mola (sun fish). The structure is one of the largest indoor aquariums in Europe and was designed by Peter Chermayeff (who also designed the Osaka Oceanarium).
Access & Transport
The oceanarium is located in the Parque das Nações, which was the exhibition grounds for the Expo '98. The Oriente train and metro station (red line) is only 400m away and several buses stop close by. Directions info: https://www.oceanario.pt/en/visit/plan-your-visit/how-to-get-there/
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with the National Azulejo Museum, also in Eastern Lisbon.
Environmental & Social
The oceanarium has incorporated sustainable practice in its day to day operations and sourcing, info here: https://www.oceanario.pt/en/sustainability It is also involved in several multi-year marine conservation projects. Details here: https://www.oceanario.pt/en/conservation/
Conclusion
The Lisbon Oceanarium is one of the undisputed non-historical highlights of the city and makes for a change away from the museums and charming streets. Don't expect to be alone though.
