Description
Lisbon Zoo (Jardim Zoologico de Lisboa) is home to 2,000 animals from over 300 species such as the Sumatran tiger, giraffes, zebra, lions, gorillas, chimpanzees, and bears. There are also some live animal shows, including one with dolphins (20mins, 3 times a day).
Access & Transport
The zoological garden is in north-western Lisbon, just beyond the North-South expressway. There is a metro station aptly named 'Jardim Zoológico' next to it (blue line) and the 'Sete Rios' train station is next door as well. Underground and open air paid parkings are available opposite the main Zoo entrance Transport & driving directions: https://www.zoo.pt/en/visit/how-to-find-us/
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this attraction with a visit of the Palácio dos Marqueses de Fronteira and its garden, 1.2km away at the edge of the Monsanto Forest Park.
Environmental & Social
Conservation features quite prominently on the zoo's website with many words, but details are pretty loose, low budget, and low impact. Doesn't seem to compensate for the ethical aspects of keeping animals in captivity.
Conclusion
The Lisbon Zoo is a decent family activity, but it could and should be better in terms of enclosure sizes and maintenance. Not world-class by any means and not recommended until this is addressed
Key positive
Good family activity
Key negative
Expensive
The concept of zoos is debatable
Suitability
Suitable for all ages and accessible for visitors with reduced mobility.
