MAAT Lisbon - by Angelo Marques on Google
Description
The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) of Lisbon houses exhibitions and events by contemporary thinkers, architects, and artists. The building was designed by Amanda Levete Architects and sits on the bank of the Tagus River with walkways connecting it to the Tejo Power Station which can be visited with all its equipment and machinery.
Access & Transport
The museum is set along the river estuary in Western Lisbon, about 1.2km east of the Jerónimos Monastery. The Belem train station is 150m away on Av. da India. Bus 728 also stops there and tram #15 at 'R. Pinto Ferreira', 400m away.
Instructions & Recommendations
The Padrão dos Descobrimentos and Jerónimos Monastery are both 15mins' walk towards the west and the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda is 20mins towards the north (1.5km)
Environmental & Social
No environmental data available. Construction required a fair amount of raw materials + use of electricity (heating/cooling) whereas the power plant has been repurposed. Some educational value and preserves the technical heritage of Lisbon
Conclusion
Recommended for those who like contemporary architecture or are keen to discover the interior of an old power plant, but probably not worth visiting on the strength of the art section alone.
Key positive
Fascinating old power plant
Impressive architecture
Key negative
The art section lacks a strong permanent collection
Suitability
Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
