Monsanto Forest Park

Estrada Serafina, Lisboa, Lisboa

Description

Monsanto Forest Park (Parque Florestal de Monsanto) is Lisbon's largest green patch. It covers 1,000ha and is mostly planted with eucalyptus, oaks, and pine trees. There are hiking and bicycle paths, some kids play areas, and some vantage points over the city.

Access & Transport

The forest park is in the northwest of Lisbon, about 5km from the city centre. The easiest is to drive there; there are exits on both the North-South expressway and the Costa do Estoril highway. By public transport, buses 711 and 724 cross the park.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activiy with a visit of the Fronteira Palace & garden and/or the Águas Livres aqueduct.

Meta review

The forest is seldom featured in travel guides and blogs although it draws favourable online reviews that describe it as a good place for outdoor activities, in particular running, cycling, and casual walking. The main drawback is the time required to reach by public transport.

Environmental & Social

Monsanto Forest Park is not really a tourist attraction but a handy outdoor option for Lisbon residents looking for a family half-day out or a little trail running.
