Description
Belém Tower (Torre de Belem) is a fortification and ceremonial gateway built in the 16th century in Lisbon. It was designed primarily in Portuguese Manueline style and consists of a 30m-high tower shielded by a bastion. It is commonly associated with the European Age of Discoveries period since it served as a departure and arrival point for Portuguese explorers. It is possible to visit the various halls inside and climb to the top - entrance fee apply.
Access & Transport
The monument is in the Belem neighbourhood of Western Lisbon, close to several other tourist attractions. Tram 15E stops nearby along Rua Bartolomeu Dias (stop 'Largo Da Princesa') and there is parking available onsite.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with the Belém Contemporary Art Museum or the Padrão dos Descobrimentos monument, both a short walk away
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Part of the city's architectural and historical heritages.
Conclusion
Considering the impact of Portuguese maritime exploration on the country (and the world), anybody with at least 48h in Lisbon should make a detour there. Plus, there are other attractions nearby. However, we feel the visit of the interior is optional - may not be worth queuing for a long time.
