Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum

Wimbledon Park Road, Greater London, England

Description

The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum (WML) is housed in the All England Lawn Tennis Club and includes memorabilia from the early days of The Championships, one of the Grand slams tennis tournaments played each year at the end of June and early July. Besides entrance to the museum, the standard ticket also includes a short visit to Centre Court for a photo. There is also a Museum & Tour ticket that includes a much longer guided visit around the grounds during which visitors will also see the player's entrance, the media centre, the BBC studio and the main press interview room - this is however beyond the scope of this review.

Access & Transport

The museum is within the All England Lawn Tennis (which most people know as "Wimbledon"). It can be reached by underground from the Southfields station (District line) followed by a 15mins walk or a short ride in bus 493. For those travelling by car, parking is available except from May to July (dates around The Championships). The museum has step free access. For those interested in the tour of the grounds, there are several instances of stairs but an alternative step-free route can be arranged.

Instructions & Recommendations

We would suggest combining a visit of the museum with a lunch in the village and a walk in Wimbledon & Putney Commons or Richmond Park, just a bit further.

Meta review

Most of the reviewers tend to be tennis fans and whilst the vast majority is pleased at having seen the grounds and enjoyed the museum, there is a fair number of visitors who are a bit underwhelmed. The reviews for the comprehensive tour are overall more positive.

Environmental & Social

The All England Club and The Championship are committed to net zero carbon emissions by 2030 and an improvement in resources efficiency. Details can be found here: https://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/atoz/sustainability.html From a social perspective, the museum and tours provide employment to guides and The Championship is a massive economic boost for the village and community although it can make living there less than ideal for a few weeks every year.

Conclusion

The Wimbledon tennis museum really is an original idea for any sporting enthusiast. For tennis fans who have not had the chance to attend a match of The Championships (tickets are pretty hard to come by), we would recommend upgrading to the Museum & Tour ticket.

Key positive

A chance to see the trophy, some interesting memorabilia, and Center Court!

Can be reached by public transport

Key negative

A tennis museum has its limits so do not have unrealistic expectations

A lot of areas are off limit, even on the tour of The Grounds

Suitability

Suitable for all ages but younger kids may not find it engaging, unless they are tennis players themselves. There is step-free access to the museum so friendly for visitors with mobility issues
