Churchill War Rooms

Clive Steps, Greater London, England

Description

The Churchill War Rooms main attraction is the Cabinet War Rooms (map room, bedroom and cabinet room): the underground complex that served as the HQ for the British Government during WW2. It is complemented by the Churchill Museum which explores the life and legacy of Winston Churchill (you can see some artefacts that belonged to him, hear part of his wartime speeches, and read some of his letters to his wife Clementine). The museum is managed by the Imperial War Museum that also covers HMS Belfast in London.

Access & Transport

Located in the core of Westminster government area, across from St James Park and near Westminster Abbaye, it is a short walk from the Westminster and St James Park underground stations (Circle, District and Jubilee lines). The area is also serviced by many bus lines.

Instructions & Recommendations

We recommend combining this with a walk in St James Park and in the Westminster area, taking in or visiting Westminster Abbey and the Palace of Westminster.

Meta review

The attraction seems to have become increasingly popular, especially since the movie "Darkest Hour" lifted the international profile of Sir W. Churchill and awareness of the war rooms. The reviews are by and large very positive, with visitors enjoying the aspect of seeing this place where history was made "in the flesh".

Environmental & Social

Neutral from a social and environmental standpoints

Conclusion

The Churchill War Rooms are definitely a unique activity, few people really fail to grasp the importance of what took place there because that would require imagining an alternative world that might be very different indeed. However, without sufficient background about WW2 itself not many visitors will be able to truly frame and appreciate all this so maybe it should not be on everybody's shortlist - though it will never be a waste of time for anybody.

Key positive

This is the real thing, without the Blitz and the uncertain future

Centrally located

Unique to the city

Key negative

Can quickly feel crowded

Quite expensive given maintenance should be reasonable

Suitability

Suitable for all ages but children less than 12 years old will not be able to relate what they are seeing. Some narrow sections but the museum is accessible to visitors with mobility issues (when the lift is in working order)
