Hampstead Heath

Parliament Hill, Greater London, England

Description

Hampstead Heath is a 320-ha heath (a shrubland habitat characterised by open, low-growing woody vegetation) located north of London, beyond Regent's Park and Primrose Hill. It has a rambling and hilly topography with a great vantage point over the city from Parliament Hill and several ponds on its eastern perimeter, three of which act as open-air public swimming pools.

Access & Transport

It is easy to drive to the Heath and parking can be found in the various residential areas. The closest train stations are Hampstead (Northern) and Hampstead Heath (Overground) to the south and Highgate (Northern) to the northeast. There are also several bus services around Belsize and Hampstead village - a 5 to 10mins walk from one of the various entrances to the park. The park is open round the clock and some, but not all, routes/paths are accessible to visitors with reduced mobility.

Instructions & Recommendations

Plan your logistics and schedule ahead of time and dress appropriately if rain is threatening or it is a windy day. Not a trek by any means but best to have appropriate footwear. This activity is best combined with a visit of Hampstead village or Camden & Kentish towns with lunch in one of those areas. Picnic also a great idea on a clear day.

Meta review

The Heath is not (yet) on the touristy trail and is more the preserve of residents. Most of the reviews are extremely positive for this green oasis at the edge of the city largely kept unspoilt, the highlight being the view from Parliament Hill. Among the few negative and recurring comments would be some dogs being left to roam unleashed and that the paths can be muddy when the previous days have been rainy. Quite a lot of issues mentioned about the use of the swimming ponds but those are not really in scope for this review

Environmental & Social

A very green activity Enhances the living environment of the surrounding communities

Conclusion

Hampstead Heath has retained a genuine natural environment and its rolling topography provides a variety of landscapes. There, it doesn't feel like you are in London - which is why we think it is one of the best venues for residents of the city rather than tourists.

Key positive

Not central but still close to the city centre considering the size of the heath

Perfect for an active walk or light trail running

Key negative

Much less enjoyable in inclement weather

Suitability

Suitable for all ages, including families with prams and requires a minimum amount of fitness. Partial accessibility (limited to certain paths) for visitors with reduced mobility
