London Eye

Belvedere Road, Greater London, England

Description

The London Eye is Europe's tallest cantilevered observation wheel and the most popular paid attraction in the country. The wheel measures 122m in diameter and the structure tops at 135m making it one of the highest observation points in the city. There are 32 air-conditioned capsules with a maximum capacity of 25 people each and customers go full circle in 30 mins.

Access & Transport

The attraction is located on the Southern bank of the river Thames, diagonally across the Palace of Westminster / Big Ben and next to the SEA Life Aquarium. The Waterloo underground and train stations are located a couple of streets back, a short 5' walk away and Westminster underground station is across the Westminster Bridge - so that is a total of 6 underground lines available to get there. Several bus routes serve the area as well and one can walk from the Westminster neighbourhood.

Instructions & Recommendations

Make sure you book ahead of time (it is cheaper) and avoid foggy and rainy days, if possible. We would recommend combining this attraction with the Westminster-based attractions such as Westminster Abbey and a visit of the UK Parliament or the adjacent SEA Life Aquarium.

Meta review

As one of the most popular attractions in the city, the London Eye is often featured in travel magazines and is therefore on the bucket list of many tourists. The numerous reviews are overall very positive on the basis of the great views over London and in particular Westminster Palace. However, there is a substantial number of customers who feel the price is not justified.

Environmental & Social

The attraction requires a meaningful amount of electricity to run (including the A/C and ventilation). Socially neutral

Conclusion

The London Eye has become an icon of the city skyline and attracts a large customer base on that basis. If this is something you want to do, then you will probably enjoy it; if you are not quite sure, then we think your money can be better spent somewhere else - it is nice but not worth the ticket price if one is objective about it.

The attraction has become a landmark

Great views over the Westminster area and its tourist highlights

Key negative

Too expensive

Not a very dynamic experience (a slow rise and fall over 30mins with limited change in views)

Suitability

Suitable for all ages. Fully accessible but restrictions on number of wheelchairs per capsule
