London Transport Museum

Covent Garden, Greater London, England

Description

The London Transport Museum explains the history of London's transport with related exhibits. There are actually two sites: the main museum in Covent Garden (opening hours reflected in this review) and the Depot located in Acton which is used to store historic artefacts (including items too large to be displayed on the main site) and is open to the public on specific days.

Access & Transport

The location is very central, next to Covent Garden and a 3mins walk to the namesake underground station. Leicester Square underground station is 500m away and there are several bus lines that stop close by on Strand and Aldwych. It is also easy to get to by car but we would not recommend it because of traffic and parking in the area is both scarce and expensive

Instructions & Recommendations

Visitors need to book a timed entry ticket. The main site can be combined with visits to Covent Garden, the National Gallery and Trafalgar Square, all within a short walking distance. We have not reviewed the LTM Depot site in Acton which should probably be visited on a different day due to its location.

Meta review

The visitors' reviews for this museum are pretty much all over - some find it very interesting and great for kids whereas others think there is not much to see, especially if you are not into trains and that it is primarily designed for kids. The other recurring negative complaints are about price and the complicated booking system.

Environmental & Social

Promotes public transport and educates visitors about sustainable solutions for the cities of the future.

Conclusion

In our opinion, the London Transport Museum is interesting but not worth the price it charges unless you make repeat visits with kids, including to their Acton depot. It seems much more geared towards residents of Greater London, in particular families.

Key positive

Good exhibits for kids

Informative and interesting to see the progression of public transport in the last ~200 years.

Key negative

For many people the entry price will not feel justified

Museum is geared towards train/bus lovers and kids

Suitability

Suitable for all ages. There is level access at the Ticket Desk, lift to floors and ramps in some areas so this activity is suitable for wheelchair users.
