Madame Tussauds London

Marylebone Road, Greater London, England

Description

Madame Tussauds displays waxworks of celebrities and historical figures - visitors can take their picture next to the life-like replicas. The London Museum was the first such concept and was created by wax sculptor Marie Tussaud in 1835; there are now over 25 museums in various cities in the world with the band name.

Access & Transport

The museum is best reached by underground with Baker Street station (Bakerloo, Circle, Hammersmith & City, Jubilee and Metropolitan lines) right next to it. Plenty of bus stops on Marylebone Rd a few seconds from the entrance as well.

Instructions & Recommendations

Best to book ahead of time as the volume of visitors is controlled and capacity is limited. This attraction can be combined with a visit to the Sherlock Holmes Museum, a discovery of the Marylebone village neighbourhood and/or a walk in Regent's Park.

Meta review

The museum is very famous and regularly features in travel magazines and to-do lists when in London. Unsurprisingly, the reviews are mostly positives (because those that are not interested do not visit and leave reviews... + there are a lot of obvious fake positive entries), with people enjoying the ability to take pictures next to the sculptures. The main complaints are around the fact that many historical figures have been replaced by more "fashionable" ones.

Environmental & Social

The activity has a low carbon footprint, and the operator uses electricity from renewable sources. Socially neutral

Conclusion

Madame Tussauds is sure to divide opinions: on one side will be those that see little point to the concept and on the other those who find it fun. So, it should be a pretty easy choice, unless you are in a group with mixed interests, in which case price and budget may come into play and on that front, unless you get good promotions, the rack price is in our view far from being justified.

Key positive

Craftmanship is overall excellent

Family friendly activity

Some fun pictures if you are into the VIP / people social concept

Key negative

Very expensive for what it is and the cost of running the place

Concept of looking at wax sculptures of famous people is not for everyone

Suitability

Suitable for all ages. The attraction is accessible to people with reduced mobility but wheelchair slots need to be booked in advance
