Science Museum, London

Exhibition Road, Greater London, England

Description

The Science Museum in London is the most visited science and technology museum in Europe. It covers a wide range of topics, from the development of steam engines to space exploration and the rise of the telecommunication and information age. There are over 15,000 objects on display as well as a 3D simulator and an IMAX (fee applies for those two). The museum is publicly funded so there is no entrance fee to the regular collections but special exhibitions charge a fee and so do the IMAX and simulators

Access & Transport

Located along Exhibition Road in South Kensington, next to the Natural History Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum, the closest underground station is South Kensington (Circle and District lines), a short 5' walk away. Plenty of bus services along Cromwell rd and Exhibition rd as well make this a pretty convenient place to reach. Access to the main building is from Exhibition road

Instructions & Recommendations

We strongly recommend booking your free tickets online ahead of time to make sure you are allowed to enter (system in place to avoid overcrowding). Plan on staying around 2-3h and discover the South Kensington neighbourhood. If you are up for it there is the Natural History Museum next door and the Victoria & Albert Museum across Exhibition rd. We also recommend arriving and/or leaving by foot through other neighbourhoods: west is High Street Kensington, south is Chelsea, east are Knightsbridge and Belgravia, and north is Hyde Park.

Meta review

The museum is extremely popular, mostly with UK tourists it seems, and families of course. Reviews are generally positive, especially given that there is no entrance fee. The main recurring negative comment is that it is insufficiently interactive to keep children engaged - the usual complaints of F&B as well, which have little to do with the quality of the museum.

Environmental & Social

The Science Museum Group has a net zero carbon emission target by 2033. From a social standpoint, marginally positive as it helps spread knowledge and culture.

Conclusion

The Science Museum of London is an excellent educational option - it is very visual and works well with kids of pretty much all ages whilst still being relevant for adults. Few museums have such extensive collections including very famous objects.

Key positive

Many different topics are tackled so there should be something of interest to anyone

Some unique objects to see up close

Free entrance means everybody has access to culture and sciences

Key negative

Museum needs to update the way info is delivered

Can be crowded and noisy when school groups are visiting

Suitability

Suitable for all ages. All floors can be accessed by lift so no access problem for visitors with mobility issues.
