Description
St James's Park is one of London's Royal Parks. It is surrounded by well-known buildings and monuments such as Buckingham Palace, The Mall, and the Horse Guards. It extends over 23ha and has a small lake with two islands in the middle of it. Originally marshland, it was drained in the 17th century and modified several times thereafter with Marble Arch (where it connects with Green Park) moving to its current location in 1851 and the Victoria Memorial being erected in the first part of the 20th century.
Access & Transport
It is very centrally located and easily accessible by public transport with 4 underground stations within a few mins walk: St James's Park, Green Park, Victoria and Westminster. The Park is accessible from 05h00 to midnight and there is no entrance fee.
Instructions & Recommendations
We would suggest avoiding rainy days to make the most of the surrounding views and enjoy a stroll in the park, possibly lying down for a while in between visits. The Park acts as a natural link between the Westminster area (W. Abbey, W. Palace, Churchill War Rooms) and Buckingham Palace / The Mall.
Environmental & Social
A green activity, with animals as a bonus.
Conclusion
St James's Park on a sunny day is pretty much picture-perfect, with the lake, Whitehall, and the London Eye far in the background. Highly recommended as a break between Westminster and The Mall / Buckingham Palace or for connecting towards Hyde Park.
