Tower Bridge visit

Tower Bridge Road, Greater London,

Description

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge built in the late 19th century - its span is equally divided and can swing upward to make way for large boats. It is located next to the Tower of London, measures 240m and its two 65m bridge towers are connected by two horizontal walkways. The bridge is open to road and pedestrian traffic and can also be visited, which is the scope of the activity reviewed here. The one-way visit starts with a climb up the North Tower (lift available), then customers will cross to the South Tower via the West Walkway and its Glass Floor section before going down to road level and making their way to the Engine Rooms.

Access & Transport

The closest underground station is Tower Hill (Circle and District lines) with Monument, London Bridge and Fenchurch train station also within walking distance to the City of London and Tower Bridge. There is also a Tower Bridge bus stop next to City Hall. The bridge visit path is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility and prams.

Instructions & Recommendations

This activity is best combined with HMS Belfast, Tower of London, Sky Gardens or The Shard.

Meta review

This iconic bridge appears regularly on travel magazines and has countless reviews, however not that many people are aware that it can be visited. Those who have done it generally have a favourable impression, highlighting the sunset views and the glass walkway section. The negative comments are centred around the fact that there isn't that much to learn about and that the best views are of the bridge, from outside.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally this activity is nearly neutral. Idem socially.

Conclusion

A visit of Tower Bridge should be on the itinerary of engineers and anybody who likes understanding how things work. It is interesting and enjoyable but nothing truly spectacular either. Whether you visit or not, make sure you get to see the bridge though.

Key positive

Good views from the walkway with the small thrill at the glass floor section

Interesting to understand how the bridge is operated

Key negative

The scope of the informational content is narrow

Suitability

Suitable for all ages. The walkways between the towers are accessible to wheelchair users.
