Description
Westminster Abbey is one of the UK's most important religious buildings. Construction of the initial church occurred as early as the 8th century and all English (then British) monarchs coronations have taken place there since that of William the Conqueror in 1066. It is also a traditional place of burial for those monarchs and famous British persons. The current structure was built in the mid-13th century following Gothic architecture and the two western towers were added in the first half of the 18th century. The Abbey only suffered minor damages during the WW2 Blitz.
Access & Transport
Very centrally located next to the Palace of Westminster / Big Ben, it is a short walk from the Westminster and St James Park underground stations (Circle, District and Jubilee lines). It is also serviced by many bus lines.
Instructions & Recommendations
Make sure you check the opening times and it may be a good idea to book tickets online ahead of time. We recommend combining this with a walk in St James Park and in the Westminster area (Big Ben is next door), as well as a visit to the Churchill War Rooms or the UK Parliament in the Palace of Westminster.
Environmental & Social
The ongoing environmental footprint is low, and the attraction provides some employments for guides as well as help maintain the city's cultural and architectural heritage
Conclusion
Westminster Abbey is definitely a visit we would recommend if the cost is not an issue and you have a genuine interest in architecture, religious buildings or English history. Very likely, you will end up being in Westminster so the time investment or cost of getting there is unlikely to be a meaningful consideration.
