Description
Griffith Park is a large municipal park (1.7km2) located just north of the Hollywood neighbourhood in Los Angeles. It is hilly, being at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains, and includes popular attractions such as the Griffith Observatory, the Los Angeles Zoo, the Hollywood Sign, the Greek Theatre (a venue for events and shows), some hiking trails and sports infrastructure. Unlike San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, it is a lot more 'rugged'.
Access & Transport
The Fern Dell Nature Trail starts just 1km north of Hollywood Boulevard and the 'Hollywood/Western' station (B line). The DASH Observatory/Los Feliz shuttle also runs every day from 10h to 22h. More info on how to get here: https://www.laparks.org/griffithpark/
Instructions & Recommendations
Bicycles are not permitted on trails and dogs must be kept on leash at all times. For safety and security there is no access to the Hollywood Sign.
Environmental & Social
Green activity. Socially, it has a marginally positive impact on the community through an improvement in quality of life (it is pleasant and healthy to have a park nearby)
Conclusion
A very good city park but not really a tourist destination in our opinion, except for the views from the Observatory. One of the best places to go for a run or hike when staying many days within the concrete expanse that is LA.
Key positive
Several trails and good views over LA
On the city's doorstep, walking distance or short bus ride
Key negative
Not many impressive natural features or landscaping
Expensive parking
Suitability
Most trails are not accessible but visitors with reduced mobility can enjoy the views with some assistance
