Los Angeles County Museum of Art

5905 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, California

Description

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the western United States and its collections spans the history of art since ancient times across several buildings, some of which were designed by Renzo Piano with a new development scheduled to be completed by 2024 by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. The collections can be divided into: American and Latin American art (incl. pre-Colombian), Modern and Contemporary Art (1900-1970's with works by the likes of Kandinsky, Klee and Picasso), Asian Arts (mostly Korean, Chinese, Japanese and Buddhist), Greek and Roman / Etruscan, Islamic art, Decorative arts and design, Photography and some permanent art installations such as the now famous Urban Light sculpture by Chris Burden (202 antique cast-iron street lights).

Instructions & Recommendations

Walk-up tickets are available, but timeslots do sell out and may not be available. Advance timed-entry tickets are highly recommended. We suggest combining this activity with the La Brea Tar Pits or the Petersen Automotive Museum.

Meta review

The museum is among the short-listed museums on the US West Coast by most travel guides and online reviews are also mostly very good with visitors praising the architecture and quality of the exhibitions and permanent collection although there are recurring comments that a lot of areas are currently closed due to ongoing architectural work (renovation/expansion) without ticket prices being adjusted. Other gripes from reviewers include the expensive parking and perplexing and inefficient timed-entry ticket purchase implemented during the recent pandemic period No longer in force at the time of this update)

Environmental & Social

No environmental data available so we consider this marginally negative (a/c, lighting). Helps spread the arts + some investments in conservation: https://www.lacma.org/learn/conservation

Conclusion

LACMA has some wonderful art spanning a broad range of time periods, geographies and medium so there should be something for everyone. Of course, this comes at the 'cost' of some depth in the collections but it is certainly one of the very best cultural activities in L.A.
