Description

The Broad is a contemporary art museum in Downtown Los Angeles. It was designed by architect firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro and is named after philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad who also entrusted their private art collection to the museum. There are about 2,000 items and art installations from 200 artists such as Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama and Cindy Sherman.

Access & Transport

The museum is next to 'Civic Ctr / Grand Park Station' (B and D lines) in Downtown LA, to the southeast of the intersection between the 101 and 110 expressways. Parking is available under the museum. Enter on 2nd St. between Hope St. and Grand Ave. Rates are $17 for 3 hours with museum validation. Accessibility info: https://www.thebroad.org/visit/accessibility

Instructions & Recommendations

All visitors must reserve timed tickets in advance. Some exhibitions and events carry a separate charge. We suggest combining this activity with a tour of the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Meta review

Art critics have mixed opinions about the overall quality of the collection but acknowledge there are some first-rate pieces. Likewise, visitors seem to have mixed feeling but really do enjoy the fantastic architecture, including the bright and spacious rooms, as well as the free admission! Some positive comments about staff friendliness.

Environmental & Social

The building is LEED Gold certified (efficient heating and colling, use of daylighting, LEDs, etc.). Positive from a social perspective by helping spread culture and the arts (for free)

Conclusion

Impressive architecture, the interior in particular, but the art collection is typical of contemporary art museums with a mix of interesting pieces and a lot of question and exclamation marks. A good option if you are wandering downtown and/or like contemporary art, otherwise it is not worth a dedicated journey
