Universal Studios Hollywood

100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City, California

Description

Universal Studios Hollywood is a theme park and film studio located to the north of Los Angeles. Originally created to offer tours of the studio sets, it has morphed into a large amusement park (with outposts around the world). The park currently has about 15 rides & shows in several themed areas such as 'The Wizarding World of Harry Potter'; those are spread across 2 lots (Upper and Lower) connected by a series of escalators called the Starway.

Meta review

Mixed reviews for this famous amusement park. Many visitors comment that it is much smaller than other US parks and the Orlando venue, that the rides are overall quite good though a little repetitive (the highlights are Waterworld and the Harry Potter theming) and that the studio tour is excellent. The downsides are the waiting time for rides, the expensive ticket and parking prices, and the poor food quality. Some negative comments about staff's friendliness but not a consistent remark.

Environmental & Social

Very energy and resources intensive complex. In comparison the 'green initiatives' such as electric trams do not really move the needle, unfortunately. No disclosure on social aspects (community & employees).

Conclusion

Universal Studios Hollywood is a good amusement park with a Hollywood-special aspect attached to it (the studio tour) but it is very much riding on its past fame and brand and can no longer compete in size with alternatives elsewhere in the country. From a value standpoint, what it delivers is underwhelming and the fault lies with the outrageous pricing policy. If you have cash to burn, this is one option.
