Description
Nérac is a village in the Lot-et-Garonne department in south-western France. It is considered as the cultural heart of the Pays d'Albret, on the banks of the Baïse river. The main sights are the Pont Vieux (Old Bridge), the old quarter with half-timbered houses, the local Castle and the Church of Saint Nicholas.
Access & Transport
The closest city is Agen, 26km away on the D656 or with bus #806 from the Agen train station. From Bordeaux, it is a 1h30mins drive on the A62 until exit #6 Aiguillon and then following the D108 until Lavardac before taking on the D930 for the last 4kms.
Instructions & Recommendations
If you have the time, the Château de Nérac is worth visiting. It houses a museum dedicated to Henri IV King of France and the Albret family. In season, there are also short cruises on the local river.
Environmental & Social
The only carbon footprint is that of your car if you drive there. Any amount spent in the area (F&B, accommodation, wine purchase) helps the local rural economy.
Conclusion
The village of Nérac is very much worth a stop if you happen to be spending some time in the region. Not quite a destination by itself but certainly scenic and enjoyable for a few hours.
