Grotte De Dargilan - by Management

Description
The Grotte de Dargilan is known for the variety of its colourful geological concretions, it is nicknamed the 'pink cave' and reveals a large quantity of stalactites, stalagmites, and a petrified waterfall. The guided tour starts with a large chamber (Grande salle du chaos) with fistulas and follows an underground river dotted with crystalline lakes. Trivia: Dargilan was the first cave open to the public in France (1890)
Access & Transport
The cave is at the border of the Aveyron and Lozere departments, just west of the village of Meyrueis. The closest town is Millau, a 40 mins drive away. There is free onsite parking
Instructions & Recommendations
The temperature inside is a cool 10° C so remember to take a sweater with you and it is best to wear closed shoes with some grip. Nearby attractions include the Gorges du Tarn, La Maison des Vautours (museum dedicated to vultures and scavengers) and the Aven Armand, another cave, but we would not advise visiting both on the same day.
Environmental & Social
Low carbon footprint (electricity). Tourism brings some economic activity to this rural area.
Conclusion
The Grotte De Dargilan may not be one of the best-known regional attractions but few visitors seem disappointed with their experience. Definitely one option to consider when exploring the area east of Millau and the Gorges du Tarn.
