Description
Lugo Cathedral (Catedral de Santa María) was completed towards the end of the 13th century but several elements were added later on (and it had to be partially rebuilt after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake) so that it blends styles ranging from Romanesque to Neoclassical. Highlights include the main façade with 2 side towers, the Gothic apse, the cloister, and the Baroque chapel of the patron saint of Lugo (Nuestra Señora de los Ojos Grandes) with its chiselled walls, dome and gilded altarpiece. There is also a Diocesan museum with paintings and a large collection of chalices.
Access & Transport
The cathedral is on the south side of the historical centre of town, next to the Roman defensive wall. Lugo is 90km southeast of A Coruña (A-6) and 100km east of Santiago de Compostela (N-547/A-54)
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with a walk around the Roman Walls and, if you have some extra time, a visit of the Provincial Museum.
Environmental & Social
No carbon footprint. Helps maintain the town's artistic and architectural heritages
Conclusion
A church that should attract religious art enthusiasts more than architecture buffs. Should be on the itinerary when visiting Lugo but we would not go as far as travelling purposely to see it considering the number of cathedral options in the region
Key positive
Striking chapel of the Virgin and frescoed apse ceiling
Small but well curated museum
Key negative
None
Suitability
All parts of the church are accessible for wheelchair users except for the museum, which is on the upper floor
