Musée & Institut Lumière

25 Rue du Premier Film, Lyon, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Description

Le Musée Lumière exhibits and documents the very beginning of cinematography with the device invented by the Lumiere brothers and used to shoot the very first movie as well as some of their other related inventions. It is housed in the Villa Lumiere which was owned by their father. The Institut Lumiere runs the museum and 2 movie theatres, one in the Villa and the other in the "Hangar du Premier Film". The association's focus is to preserve the cinematographic heritage.

Meta review

Online reviews for the museum are mainly positive. They state this is an excellent place to learn more about the historical and technical aspects of the early movies with many original equipment on display and some interactive exhibits. Thumbs up for the audio-guide available in multiple languages as well. It is not obvious what changes were brought by the renovation because the latest feedback from visitors is pretty much consistent with that prior to the lengthy closure of the museum.

Environmental & Social

We deem the museum environmentally marginally negative (electricity consumption). Educational aspect and preserves a technical heritage

Conclusion

Not everybody knows about the beginning of cinematography: where, whom and how? If you are curious about any of those answers then the Musee Lumiere is definitely worth a visit for any traveller to the city.
