Old Lyon district

3 Avenue Adolphe Max, Lyon, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Description

The Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon) is the city's medieval and Renaissance district encompassing the Saint Jean, Saint Paul and Saint Georges neighbourhoods. It is one of Europe largest Renaissance districts and is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Saint Jean neighbourhood was the medieval center of power, around the namesake Cathedral whilst 15-16th century Saint Paul was home to bankers and merchants living in townhouses. On the other hand, Saint Georges was a lot poorer with many silk weavers living there before they moved to the Croix Rousse hill in the 19th century. They left behind some of the famous "traboules", corridors connecting streets through buildings and their courtyards.

Access & Transport

The district is located in the 5th arrondissement, across the Saone River from the 1st and 2nd arr. The main public transport stations are Vieux Lyon - Cathédrale Saint-Jean (metro D and funicular F1, F2) and the Lyon St Paul tram and train station. There are bus services crossing the various bridges to the central and eastern neighbourhoods of the city.

Instructions & Recommendations

The area is quite lively in the evenings. Make sure to visit the Lyon Cathedral and other nearby attractions include the Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière, the Musée Cinéma et Miniature (in the Old Lyon itself), and the Roman Theatres of Fourvière.

Meta review

The district is widely considered to be one of the main tourists' sights in Lyon by travel guides, magazine and online portals. Tourists enjoy the myriad of beautiful buildings, the "secret" traboules and suggest visiting at various times of the day to have a different experience: neighbourhood markets early morning and apéros in the evening. The main drawback highlighted consistently is that the high number of tourists means many restaurants do not focus on quality so you should avoid the tourist traps with long menus and look for those authentic bouchons lyonnnais.

Environmental & Social

Very urban environment. Increase in tourism and commercialization is putting pressure on rents and impacting the community - this is partially compensated by an increase in work and economic opportunities.

Conclusion

As the historical heart of the city, the Vieux Lyon is a must-explore district for any first-time visitor. Even residents like to go out there because of the quaint streets and atmosphere (being located in the Free Zone, Lyon was spared from bombings during WW2, so most buildings are in their original form).
