Resistance and Deportation History Centre

14 Avenue Berthelot, Lyon, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Description

The Resistance and Deportation History Centre documents the French resistance and the deportation and genocide of Jewish people during WW2. It is located in Lyon, in a building designed at the end of the 19th century to prepare health professionals for the French army but that was temporarily used as the Gestapo's regional HQs during the German occupation. The museum displays a mix of photographs, propaganda posters, audio-visual testimonies and focuses on the resistance in Lyon. There are also temporary exhibitions relating to genocides and human rights, and a documentation centre with over 27,000 books and newspapers.

Meta review

The museum is often mentioned in travel guides and ranks well on online portals but isn't well known by the wider public. Reviews point out the educational value and large amount of information but whilst some find engrossing, others think it isn't very engaging / immersive and could do with some modernization and more interactivity.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally neutral and socially positive for its educative, memorial and documentation / preservation aspects

Conclusion

The museum and documentation center does a good job of explaining broad concepts such as the Occupation, Resistance, Deportment and Repression in the context of Lyon, which makes it easier to grasp and empathise with for visitors. Not a highlight for those with very limited time but an excellent cultural activity nonetheless
