Roman Theatres of Fourvière

17 Rue Cleberg, Lyon, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Description

The Roman Theatres of Fourvière consist of two-well preserved amphitheatres from the antique city of Lugdunum, in the southwest of modern-day Lyon. The larger structure is called the Ancient Theatre and was built in 15BC before being expanded in the 2nd century. It is just over 100m in diameter and can seat up to 10,000 spectators across 3 levels radiating from the center stage. The Odeon built towards the end of the 1st century forms an unusual combination with its larger neighbour and was mostly used for musical shows and public reading and gatherings. It is 73m in diameter and can accommodate up to 3,000 persons. Every summer, the multicultural festival les Nuits de Fourvière takes place across both venues.

Meta review

The site is generally listed among the must-see sights in Lyon and visitors are impressed to find such well-preserved ruins so close to a major European city without hefty entrance fee applied. They also enjoy the views over Lyon from there and only wish there were more explanations on site.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally green. Socially positive as it helps preserve the architectural and historical heritages of the city. The free aspect is also a positive for local residents who can come here for a break and those with a limited budget.

Conclusion

The Gallo-Roman ruins of Lugdunum are a striking reminder of the long history of Lyon and the perfect opportunity (alongside the Lugdunum museum next to it) to learn more about it. It is also a nice place to come and enjoy with a book, or for a show in the summer.
