Chinchón town

Plaza Mayor, Chinchón, Comunidad de Madrid

Description

Chinchón is a town situated 50km to the southwest of Madrid and known for its historic centre, especially its Plaza Mayor built between the 15th and 17th century. The square is surrounded by three-storey houses with arcades and wooden balconies (234 of them!). It regularly hosts activities such as festivals, theatre and bullfights. Other highlights within the town include the century Clock Tower built in 1755 that chimes every half hour, the 16th Church of Our Lady of the Assumption (different styles ranging from Gothic to Baroque) which includes a Goya painting inside, the 17th century Convent of San Agustín (transformed into a parador), and the Castillo de los Condes on the outskirts of town.

Access & Transport

By car from Madrid, drive along the A-3 then get on the M-317 at exit 41 and onto the M0316 past Valdelaguna. Alternatively, you can head south on the A-4 and take exit 29 onto the M-404 all the way to your destination. The bus company La Veloz operates bus 337 between Plaza Conde Casal and Chinchón. It also runs bus 430 from/ to Aranjuez.

Instructions & Recommendations

The town is a popular day trip from Madrid and get busy on weekends so you may want to schedule accordingly. You can check the schedule of events on the municipal website here: http://www.ciudad-chinchon.com/turismo/index.php This activity is well combined with a visit of the town of Ocaña or Aranjuez with its Royal Palace and Gardens.

Meta review

Chinchón is often recommended as a day-trip option from Madrid. Sure enough, most visitors are primarily impressed by the Plaza Mayor, often rating it as one of their favourites in the country. They enjoy the originality of the green shade and balconies, the sand-covered square, and the many bars and restaurants that clearly cater to tourists but are not unreasonably priced. The church of Our Lady of the Assumption comes in second place but, according to reviewers, is worth the short hike for the painting of the Assumption of the Virgin by Goya and the views over town.

Environmental & Social

The main activities in the town have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local economy even though there are signs of over-commercialisation

Conclusion

Chinchón main draw is by far the distinctive and picturesque Plaza Mayor but there is a handful of other buildings worth a quick visit. We think it is a good day trip option from Madrid or for those transitioning between the capital and the Province of Toledo.
